Sunny Corner Ride with Kim, Marty, Clayton, Paul, Michael & some locals
KTMKim (KTM530) left Wollongong at 0515 and met Marty
(KTM400), Clayton
(XR400), Paul (KTM300 two smoker) and Michael (WR405F) at the top of the
hill in the Blue Mountains for breakfast and refuelling at 0645. We met
Rob (KTM525) at 0900 and three local Bathurst riders (KTM300-electric
start, Husaberg 450 and WR450F) just outside Sunny Corner State Forest
to drive into a secret camping spot for the weekend.
After unloading the bikes and gearing up we headed out at 1000 following
the locals who know all the single-line. After a few gnarly hills and
some single-line got to the "ski-run", a super gnarly hill. Only the
KTM300 made it up, the rest of us giving it a few enthusiastic attempts
! Coming back down on one of my unsuccessful attempts I thought I saw a
mountain goat stuck half way up the hill. Rob did a 8.5 flip on his bike
as we watched it disappear into the bushes !
We arrived back at camp for lunch and refuelling 1300-1330 before
heading back out. We rode on some steep, gnarly tight single line (the
reverse direction of the some of the afternoon leg of last years Sunny
Corner Rally).
We rode past quads (some carrying shooters - and I don't mean tequila
slammers lol), a large group of campers who had a laugh when one of our
riders was stuck on a bank and fell off (WR450F by the way) and through
a tunnel under the "main road" through the forest. We arrived back to
camp at dusk 1700. Clayton then left us to go home to his brother's
birthday bash.
To my great surprise (not) the beers, JBs, whiskeys and bench racing
began to flow around the bonfire as the locals cooked the barbie for us.
Michael supplied the firecrackers which when expended were replaced with
exploding aerosol cans to blow up various parts of the bonfire.
The next morning we headed out at 0930 after breakfast when two more
locals arrived, WR450F and a hybrid CRX500 two smoker (see pic). The
sound it made me reminded me of my old IT426 I used to ride (well tried
to control anyway). Rob didn't make it out of his swag as someone had
slipped alcohol into his whisky and poisoned him ! After some tight
single-line amongst the pine forest we headed to the top of the ridge
for some good views. We arrived back at 1130 when the locals left us.
At 1200 Marty, Paul, Michael and I (hardened enduro warriors) headed out
to play until 1330. We packed up and left at 1445 and I arrived home at
1900.
A great weekend's riding and camping with plenty of single-line, hill
climbs, creek crossings coupled with perfect weather (sunny and cool -
prime KTM alpine conditions ha ha). I highly recommend a weekend riding
here (I have done it in a day from Wollongong but it's a long
driving-riding day) and the Sunny Corner Rally in September is always a
riding highlight of the year.
